Congratulations on your victory in the “Rolex Grand Prix” at the CHIO Aachen, which you certainly had to fight hard for…

You can say that again! When I walked the course it was clear to me that it was going to be very, very difficult today. The obstacles were very demanding, the time was very tight. As the first to go in the class, I didn’t have the best starting position either. Which is why I am all the more delighted that it ultimately sufficed for the victory. Everything simply went so well for me today, it was a perfect day. I have dreamt about winning here as long as I can remember. When I came to the CHIO Aachen the first time at the age of five and walked passed the winners’ board, I thought: I would like my name to stand there one day! But I never dreamt that this would become true. To be honest, I still can’t believe it.

 

You just spent four weeks in Calgary taking part in several international shows there in Spruce Meadows. Was that perhaps the key to your success? Did you bring the motivation from Calgary with you to Aachen?

Yes, that really helped me, and I believe it was decisive for my success. I was able to prepare my horse “LB Convall” excellently for the impressive atmosphere in Aachen, so that he felt at home here from the very beginning. That was precisely my plan and it certainly paid off!

 

How was the “Rolex Grand Prix” for you?

It was simply phenomenal – from the very first moment through to the prize-ceremony. There is always a “full house” in Aachen, the crowd loves the sport. Then, that huge grass ring and the long history of the show. Being able to ride here is simply indescribable. I am especially proud to have won the “Rolex Grand Prix”, because Rolex simply stands for top sport. I can’t thank everyone enough for this unique day!

 

After this Major victory your personal Rolex Grand Slam has begun. How do you rate your chances of claiming the title?

What Scott Brash succeeded in doing last year was simply unique. To win two Majors in succession that alone is very, very difficult – not to mention the Grand Slam victory! Hence I am not expecting to follow Scott’s lead here. However, “Convall” is an exceptional horse. He is just nine years old and hasn’t competed at many top class shows yet. The fact that he was able to put in such a performance against the best pairs in the world here in Aachen, shows how special he is. So the chance is there!

 

So we will see you again at the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ in Calgary in September? 

Definitely! I wanted to compete there anywhere, whatever the outcome here in Aachen was. Of course, thanks to the Major victory it is even more worthwhile now. I am looking forward to taking on this challenge!

Herzlichen Glückwunsch zu Ihrem Triumph im „Rolex Grand Prix“ des CHIO Aachen – ein hart erkämpfter Majorsieg …

Das kann man wohl sagen! Beim Abgehen des Parcours war mir schon klar, dass es heute ganz besonders schwer wird. Die Hindernisse waren sehr anspruchsvoll, die Zeit wirklich knapp bemessen. Als allererster Starter der Prüfung hatte ich ohnehin nicht die beste Ausgangslage. Umso mehr freue ich mich, dass es am Ende für den Sieg gereicht hat. Es lief einfach für mich heute, es war ein perfekter Tag. Seit ich denken kann, träume ich davon, hier zu gewinnen. Als ich mit fünf Jahren das erste Mal beim CHIO Aachen war und an der Siegertafel vorbeilief, dachte ich: Einmal will ich da auch stehen! Aber ich hätte mir nie träumen lassen, dass es wahr wird. Ich kann es, ehrlich gesagt, noch nicht ganz fassen.

 

Sie waren gerade erst vier Wochen in Calgary, haben dort an einigen internationalen Turnieren in Spruce Meadows teilgenommen. War das vielleicht Ihr Schlüssel zu Sieg? Haben Sie den Schwung aus Calgary mit nach Aachen gebracht?

Ja, das hat mir sehr geholfen und war, glaube ich, auch ausschlaggebend für meinen Erfolg. In Spruce Meadows konnte ich mein Pferd „LB Convall“ hervorragend auf die beeindruckende Atmosphäre in Aachen vorbereiten, sodass er sich hier von Anfang an wohlgefühlt hat. Genau das war mein Plan, und der ist aufgegangen!

 

Wie haben Sie den „Rolex Grand Prix“ erlebt?

Es war einfach gewaltig – vom ersten Moment an bis zur Siegerehrung. In Aachen herrscht immer „volles Haus“, das Publikum ist begeistert vom Sport. Dann noch der große Rasenplatz und die lange Historie des Turniers. Hier reiten zu dürfen, ist einfach unbeschreiblich. Es macht mich besonders stolz, den „Rolex Grand Prix“ gewonnen zu haben, weil Rolex einfach für Spitzensport steht. Ich kann mich nicht genug für diesen einmaligen Tag heute bedanken!

 

Mit diesem Majorsieg hat Ihr persönlicher Rolex Grand Slam begonnen. Wie schätzen Sie Ihre Chancen auf den Titel ein?

Was Scott Brash im vergangenen Jahr geschafft hat, war einfach einmalig. Zwei Majors hintereinander zu gewinnen, das allein ist sehr, sehr schwer – vom Grand-Slam-Sieg ganz zu Schweigen! Ich erwarte also nicht, es Scott gleichzutun. Aber ich habe mit „Convall“ ein ganz außergewöhnliches Pferd. Er ist erst neun Jahre alt und hat noch nicht viele Turniere auf Spitzenniveau bestritten. Dass er hier in Aachen gegen die besten Paare der Welt solch eine Leistung vollbringen konnte, zeigt, wie besonders er ist. Die Chance ist da!

 

Also werden wir Sie im September beim Spruce Meadows ‚Masters‘ in Calgary wiedersehen?

Auf jeden Fall! Ich wollte sowieso dort an den Start gehen, unabhängig vom Ausgang hier in Aachen. Durch den Majorsieg lohnt  es sich natürlich noch ein bisschen mehr. Ich freue mich auf die Herausforderung und werde sie gerne in Angriff nehmen!

Félicitation pour votre victoire dans le « Rolex Grand Prix » du CHIO d’Aix-la-Chapelle – une victoire dans un Majeur durement gagnée ...

C’est le moins que l’on puisse dire! Lors de la reconnaissance du parcours, je me suis dit qu’aujourd’hui, cela allait être véritablement difficile. Les obstacles étaient très exigeants, le chronomètre serré. Etant dans les premiers concurrents de l’épreuve, je n’avais pas la meilleure place de départ. Mais je suis heureux qu’au final cela me conduise à la victoire. Tout s’est déroulé simplement pour moi aujourd’hui, ce fut un jour parfait. Aussi longtemps que je m’en souvienne, c’était un rêve de gagner ici. J’avais 5 ans la première fois que je suis venu au CHIO d’Aix-la-Chapelle, et lorsque je passais devant le panneau recensant les noms des vainqueurs, je me disais : un jour, je serai à cette place ! Mais jamais je n’aurais imaginé que ce rêve se réaliserait. D’ailleurs, je ne le réalise pas encore vraiment. 

 

Vous étiez à Calgary durant quatre semaines et vous avez participé à quelques concours internationaux à Spruce Meadows. Est-ce la clé de votre succès? Avez-vous apporté l’énergie de Calgary jusqu’à Aix-la-Chapelle?

Oui, je pense que cela m’a aidé et que c’est même la cause essentielle de mon succès. A Spruce Meadows, j’ai pu préparer mon cheval « LB Convall » à l’atmosphère impressionnante d’Aix-la-Chapelle, pour qu’il se sente dès le début à l’aise ici. C’était mon plan, et cela a fonctionné!

 

Comment avez-vous vécu le « Grand Prix Rolex » ?

C’était tout simplement énorme – des premiers instants à la remise des prix. A Aix-la-Chapelle, les tribunes sont toujours complètes, le public enthousiasmé par le sport. S’ajoute à cela ce grand terrain en herbe et l’histoire du concours. Pouvoir monter à cheval ici est simplement indescriptible. Je suis très fier d’avoir remporté le « Grand Prix Rolex », parce que Rolex est synonyme de sport de haut niveau. Je ne pourrai jamais être suffisamment reconnaissant d’avoir vécu une telle journée!

 

Avec cette victoire, votre Rolex Grand Slam personnel vient de débuter. Comment évaluez-vous vos chances de remporter ce titre?

Ce que Scott Brash a réussi l’année dernière est tout simplement unique. Gagner deux majeurs successivement, c’est déjà extrêmement difficile – et cela sans mentionner la victoire dans le Grand Chelem. Je ne m’attends pas à suivre les traces de Scott.  Mais j’ai, avec « Convall », un cheval exceptionnel. Il n’a que neuf ans et peu de concours de haut niveau à son actif. Ce qu’il a accompli ici à Aix-la-Chapelle, face aux meilleurs couples du monde, montre à quel point il est extraordinaire.  Je tiens ma chance!

 

Donc, nous allons vous revoir en septembre au Spruce Meadows ‹ Masters › de Calgary?

C’est certain! Je voulais de toute façon m’y rendre, quelque soit le résultat ici, à Aix-la-Chapelle. Naturellement, ma victoire dans le Majeur m’y encourage un peu plus encore. Je suis impatient de relever ce nouveau défi et de m’y attaquer dès aujourd’hui!
